Assist clients with medication

The course applies to individuals working in the health and community services sectors such as Aged Care Workers, Community Care Workers, Disability Support Workers, Personal Care Workers and Respite Care Workers who wish to develop the knowledge and skills in supporting people to self-administer medication and complete medication documentation, according to the relevant Federal and state/territory legislation, regulations, codes or practice and workplace policies and procedures.

Students will also develop an understanding of the various forms of medication, the different modes medication can be administered as well as the characteristics of several commonly used medications, including both prescribed and over the counter medication.  In addition, students will assist with providing medication using at least five (5) different types of medications and at least three (3) different modes of administration as well as complete associated medication documentation.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) recommends Medication Management training is refreshed annually to stay current with policies, procedures and techniques.

Important information prior to enrolment

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
  • Visual acuity, with or without corrective aids, to accurately read medication care plans, medication labels, and measuring equipment, and to observe client condition.
  • To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
  • Learning: Can learn and remember steps for safely helping someone take their medicine and know when to ask for further advice.
    • Reading: Can read and understand labels, instructions, or charts that show how and when medication should be taken.
    • Writing: Can write simple notes or fill in records to keep track of medication that’s been given or when a patient refuses it.
    • Oral communication: Can ask and answer questions clearly to make sure I understand how to help someone with their medication.
    • Numeracy: Can use basic maths to check times, doses, or the number of tablets that need to be given.
    • Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources
  • The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.
 

Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face – The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 5-6 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.

No work placement will be required as part of this course.

Practical scenarios: 

  • Scenario 1 – Provide assistance with medication – Asthma
  • Scenario 2 – Provide assistance with medication – Anaphylaxis
  • Scenario 3 – Provide assistance with medication – PRN Liquid Paracetamol
  • Scenario 4 – Provide assistance with medication – Eye Drops
  • Scenario 5 – Provide assistance with medication – Tablets

 

Documentation – The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:

  • Incident Report Forms
  • Medication Administration Forms
 

Theory assessment –   A written assessment consisting of short answer and multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
